Five of us washed ashore, with the sixth, as luck would have it, being our navigator. He arrived decoupled from his body, hung high on the side of a barnacled sea stack, tangled in the brined ropes of the forestay as if hung up for display in some odd curio shop, pendent in a knotted bag. It took the better part of the day for us to climb to Sailing Master John’s remains, cut it free, and put it to a proper burial, but despite our weary condition and in fact because of it, I deemed it a necessary task and an opportunity to solidify discipline for the small remnant of our crew. I was wrong on both counts.

As I worked alongside the men on this arduous and troubling task, stared at by bird pecked sockets that cast supervisory judgement upon our work, Seaman Marten and Gunner Satyre glanced frequently over at Edward. He was too sick to help, and sat away from the sightless grasping of the sea, holding tight his knees to hide the trembling he knew would disappoint me. Talbot lay at his feet in weary guard, too tired to shake free of the salt which encrusted his fur.

It happened just as we cut the head free and it tumbled into my arms. I saw, or rather felt, something watching.
