The third thing we became sure of was something which Edward discovered, deep into our sixth day, and heading into night. He was walking in front of me when he abruptly stopped in his tracks. “Brother,” he said. I followed his gaze to two twigs which formed an inverted “V.” We were traveling in circles. I glanced at the other men, who had turned their attention to Edward’s call. Now they also knew we were lost. Edward flushed, realizing he had doomed us. Marten and Satyre, who were merely waiting for the right time to mutiny, acted immediately. Some part of my mind wanted to tell Edward even then, “See, that is how you do it.” Satyre struck Edward unconscious. Marten advanced on me. I drew my pistol, but Marten merely grinned, yanked the weapon from my hands, and tucket it into his own belt. He thrust the tip of his makeshift spear under my chin and said, “I know you got no powder for it.” I cast about. Petru and Talbot were gone, and Satyre had just realized it. Satyre was urging Marten to depart soon, and during their heated talk, I was temporarily ignored. I thought of escape, when Marten whirled suddenly and thrust his spear deep into my belly. “Payment for all your high and mighty looking down upon us, Master Captain sir.” I managed to croak a surprised protest, before all went black. Oddly, of all things I could regret, I dismayed that his crude laughter would be the last thing I would hear, as it chased me into the depths of the Afterlife.
