I had disturbing dreams then. I ran, endlessly, breathlessly, chased through an endless forest of thorns by dozens of beasts with demonic heads of wolves and goats. And though thorns pierced my flesh, I continued to run, until I found I moved no longer. I looked down and saw that I had run my feet into bloody stumps. There was only jagged bone where they once had been. I sought to scream then, but found I had no voice with which to do so. I came to a silvered mirror to examine my throat, and when I looked, the sightless visage of Sailing Master John stared back.
“You’ve come around.” Something about his voice was both stirring and soothingly familiar. He was the definition of a Lord, at the same time delicate and strong, with an air of command that could not be denied. His hair was tied back in intricate loops, a neat ribbon summarizing all into a final statement of elegance. He was naturally superior in every way to me, I understood this at a bodily level. He was unattainable. And therefore desirable. I craved his smell. It was exotic, a musky incense burned in ancient temples. I yearned for his cool and gentle touch, which he withdrew from my face. But most of all I craved his attention. I wanted, needed, all of it, as I needed the very air I breathed.
“Your brother is safe,” he said. After a long moment of staring at his hazel eyes, I recalled that I had a brother. Yes, I was sure of it. A name visited my mind, unbidden, but left just as quickly, teasing, ever out of reach, just like my Lord. Embarrassment ran through me, swirling into a stew of irritation. I was not upset that I had forgotten my own brother’s name. Rather, I was infuriated that my brother had taken even the tiniest sliver of my Lord’s attention. Was my Lord concerned about my brother? Did he love him? I instantly hated my brother and his bottomless selfishness. How dare he take from me, the attention I needed to live.
Grasping for a way to hold my Lord’s attention, I stammered out the only thing I could think of, “Where am I? You’ve healed me.” It was then I realized I was utterly devoid of a single article of clothing, and lay in a sumptuous bed, in what must be a very large castle.
